Barnett Waddingham was founded in 1989. From a small actuarial consultancy it grew substantially and now employs around 600 staff in 7 UK offices. The staff expects from the IT department to be able to deliver technology that solves their problems really quickly. The staff constantly utilizes technology, such as tablets, cloud services, Facebook, and they need to have the IT toold come to get their job done. And they expect them to adapt and change rapidly.
One of the biggest challenges that the IT department faces is to manage the information’s security. There is lot of clients information and it is essential that this information is kept secured, ensuring a proper relationship of trust between the company and its clients. In the next 5-10 years some of the biggest challenges will be regarding staff's use of technology and managing the information’s security risk. Additional security risks may arise from technology's rapid change, with cloud and social network innovations.
Cloud based technology is becoming more and more relevant for an organisation’s infrastructure. From the company's point of view they are looking to free the IT team from managing infrastructure internally, in order to add value to the business, while some else, at the same time, manages that infrastructure.
It is crucial that the board understands technology and risk. In the past it has really been an issue. Nowadays, Boards are changing and becoming more aware of technology and its uses. Those boards that are not becoming aware of it will find themselves in trouble by not adapting to a challenging environment. Therefore, it is really important to educate the Board so that they are aware of what technology can do and the underlying risks.
