The Impact of Cloud IT on business working and culture
Wildbore & Gibbons LLP April 2013
Wildbore & Gibbons LLP were established in 1887 and with such a long history serving a client base of very diverse brands we have certainly experienced many changes to both our business and our markets.
The world of trade mark advice is a very dynamic one. Trade marks are valuable entities often with global potential and therefore brands and brand owners are constantly making both short and long term decisions about protecting and developing their brands across different jurisdictions and markets.
Wildbore is a specialist firm based in London that acts for many global brands. As such IT and communication systems are crucial to client service delivery and business efficiency. Wildbore moved its IT systems completely to the Cloud in March 2012. With over a year of experience in the Cloud environment the team at Wildbore now have a good insight into the impact that a move to the Cloud can have when all staff embrace the change.
One of the first positive changes was that we no longer required 5 servers in our building - freeing up space and a certain amount of manpower. We are experts in our own field of “IP” not in ”IT” so “delegating” responsibility to London Cloud and physically not having the servers in our building allowed us to feel liberated from owning and managing IT!
Although we had a very positive view of flexible working and remote working before March 2012 the move to the Cloud has definitely focused our thoughts on how we can enable staff to work more flexibly and enable them to use IT and remote working much more efficiently. One of our key staff members actually had a serious injury within weeks of our move to the Cloud which meant that she could not come to the office. Being frustrated at home she found being able to work remotely became an important part of her rehabilitation and enabled her to work very efficiently in her own time and at her own pace. We have definitely found that staff have been empowered by the move to the Cloud and we look on flexible working as a contributor to business efficiency.
Our Cloud based IT also enables us to simplify our office relocation which we will be project managing later in 2013. We also have the flexibility to plan our office space differently – no longer needing room for servers etc – and possibly use less space if there is more flexible working. From a cultural point of view we now have the opportunity to be more flexible about actual days physically present in the office with many of our staff. We have a strong core of committed staff who will benefit from the work-shifting culture while also enabling the firm as a whole to deliver more efficient services to clients.
A “Cloud “culture
In our first year of Cloud based IT we have seen a steady evolution in our working culture –towards viewing flexible working as an advantage for our business –for both our staff and our clients. Many prospective staff view our ability to offer flexible working as a major advantage over other firms. Our Cloud based IT also demonstrates that we are embracing new ways to work and deliver services to our clients which promotes us as a forward thinking firm despite our long history.
