SME attitudes to Alternative Funding: Knowledge Peers research plans and some initial results.
12 Jun 2013
Commencing July 2013, a syndicate led by Knowledge Peers will be carrying out in depth research into the practical development of Alternative Funding models: we will be ignoring the theory and the hype! Please get in touch with Tania Ziegler or Chris Dines via the Knowledge Peers site (or phone 020 783 10076) if you wish to find out more.
We already have some initial survey results, preliminary to our main body of work. In a survey of London 400 SME's (average of 10 staff, bias towards creative/digital businesses), we found that 61 per cent currently have funding from a bank (that means a loan or overdraft), and 22 per cent might consider such funding in the next 12 months. That compares to 6 per cent and 34 per cent for venture capital. When you look at equity crowd funding and peer to peer loans, the current usage is 2%, with less than 20% of those SMEs considering it as a possibility.
No doubt lack of awareness plays a big part here. Less than a quarter of SMEs surveyed had reasonable knowledge of what Equity Crowd Funding or Peer to Peer Lending are.
Lots more from Knowledge Peers on this in the coming months. You might be interested in joining our Alternative Funding Network as well.
