Safia Minney is the founder of People Tree, a sustainable fashion brand. Having founded the company with her husband in Japan in 1991, it is now recognised as a pioneer in sustainable fashion, and has received certification from the World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO) and the Soil Association.
Here, Safia explains the benefits of sustainable practice. Fundamentally, it means providing a fairer deal to the company's network of farmer and artisan producers - People Tree work with 150 groups in 12 countries - but it also has benefits for your business, with both customers and the industry showing increasing demand for ethical products, even if they cost more.
Safia also adds that it can be an expensive process, with People Tree spending £250,000 a year, around 10% of their turnover, on technical assistance to farmers and artisans. However, if the WFTO continue to bring their standards to different sectors, sustainable manufacturing processes could become mandatory, levelling the playing field.
